Where We Work

We currently work in three locations in Afghanistan. Current regions include the following cities & villages (& surrounding rural districts):

  • Jalalabad
  • Kabul
  • Kandahar

Afghanistan has endured thirty years of war, which has destroyed the economy and infrastructure of the nation. For many years the country suffered under the harsh rule of the Taliban, a strict Islamic group which prohibited women from working outside the home and girls from receiving education. In recent years the country again struggles against the resurgence of the Taliban.

Afghanistan has a large population of dependent widows and orphans along with an entire generation that has received virtually no education.

There is little work available and traditional agricultural systems have been severely disrupted by the constant movement of refugees, the estimated 10 million landmines indiscriminately scattered across the country, and years of drought in recent history.

In the past, there has been little for refugees in Pakistan and other nations to return home to but poverty, insecurity, disease and an average life span of only 43 years. Although recent events have witnessed the collapse of the Taliban regime and a new and renewed hope of peace and stability in the country, there are still many obstacles to overcome along the road to reconstruction.

The People are hospitable - brave - desperately poor - poetic - concerned about their honour. If you are welcomed by an Afghan as a friend then there is no one more hospitable or more committed to your good. If he is your enemy then better watchout.

An elected Government that replaced the oppressive Taliban rule is continuing to face insurgencies and opposition from warlords and militants. So the struggle continues for stability in a country that has been ravaged by war over the past thirty years.

Would You want to make a difference in a land that really needs it?
